LAKE VILLAGE – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will host a special public input meeting regarding the future of fisheries management on Lake Chicot at 7 p.m., Feb. 16, at the Lake Village Expo Center in Chicot County.
Lake Chicot is known for its fabulous sport fishing, particularly for largemouth bass and crappie . Part of that reputation is the result of sound biological management with the input of anglers to help steer the focus of the fishery.
“We have had a fishery management plan using public input in place for Lake Chicot since 2002,” said Diana Andrews, AGFC regional fisheries biologist. “That plan is reviewed every five years to determine if revisions are needed and this public meeting coincides with that review schedule.”
The public meeting will be different than years past, as AGFC biologists are beginning to standardize the format in which management plans for all high-profile lakes are handled.
“We will begin with a presentation on the history of the lake and the current status of the fishery,” Andrews said. “Then we will break the audience up into small working groups and allow them to identify areas of concern and possibilities for the future.”
Andrews says all ideas presented at the meeting will be reviewed, and biologists will use them to develop the latest version of the Lake Chicot Management Plan. That plan will be presented to the public at a follow-up meeting, March 2 for final input.
“Anyone interested in improvements to the fishery or with comments dealing with regulations, stocking, habitat or other concerns should try to attend both meetings,” Andrews said. “This will be a working document that will continue to be updated and reviewed to make sure we manage the fishery with the interest and input of our anglers in mind.”
