Annual Outdoor Expo Set

The SouthArk Outdoor Expo—last year’s Arkansas Festivals and Events Best Festival runner-up—returns on Sept. 10 to the El Dorado Conference Center with all-new attractions in addition to familiar contests and exhibits.
In its 18th year, the day-long event aimed across the age spectrum is hosted by the South Arkansas Community College Foundation, and is sponsored by Apex Redi-Mixed Concrete. Proceeds for the Outdoor Expo support efforts of the foundation, which include college scholarships for SouthArk students.
Arkansas Outdoor Hall of Famer Steve “Wildman” Wilson will be the guest headliner. At 10 a.m. he will hold a seminar on preparing for the upcoming fall hunting seasons.
New to the festival this year are a car show sponsored by Teague Auto Group and Trotter Auto El Dorado, and a youth talent contest.
Returning are a rib cook-off sponsored by El Dorado Chemical, carrying a top prize of $2,000; the Maj. Ronald Wayne Culver Hero 5K sponsored by Nexans-Amercable; and an outdoor photography contest. Ribs from the cooking contest can be purchased and picked up on the day of the event.
Some of these contests still are accepting entries; for more information about them, and about purchasing ribs, see www.southarkexpo.com.
Live musical entertainment throughout the day will be provided by the Cummins Prison Band, Jimmy Lewis and the Eight-Second Ride and the Seth Walker Band.
Among the more than 70 exhibits will be an Arkansas Game and Fish wildlife trailer and youth target shooting area; the Arkansas Chamber of Commerce Be Pro Be Proud interactive display; a chainsaw carver; autumn planting advice from the Union County Master Gardeners; live animals; and health and safety information.
A children’s play area will include balloon makers, jugglers and stilt walkers, inflatable bouncers, face painting and an appearance by Smokey the Bear.
Vendors will be selling items including outdoors equipment, all-terrain vehicles, boats, motorcycles and leather goods.
Admission to the event is one canned or pre-packaged food item per person, which will be donated to Turning Point Violence Intervention Center.
Additional information about the event is available at (870) 864-7106 or foundation@southark.edu.
